George Kojo
Appiah Kubi, popularly known in acting as Paa George was born on the 10th
May 1937 and hails from Akyem Tafo in
the Eastern Region. With six children one is deceased. He completed school in
1964 and joined the brigade in 1967. It was there that the brigade based in the
Nungua town had a concert party and he joined to entertain farmers by playing
jazz.
The ‘I told
you so actor’ began liking acting from childhood. Talking about the fact that
his parents didn’t have a problem with what he aspires to be this is what he
said
“One thing
that we have to learn from the whites is that when a white man’s child takes a
knife to play with they look on till it cuts the child then he won’t pick it up
again. My mother was wondering if acting
is what I really like” he said.
He joined
Akan Drama whiles in the brigade group when Mr. Kobena Taylor was the head of
the Ghana Broadcasting co operation. Paa George made it clear on Skery Spark
Talk on yes 102.9fm that they are still in the industry even though they are
old unlike others because their movies are real and teaches lessons. “If
someone has to play the role of an old man they don’t need to paint someone
else’s hair white to fit the role, he has grey hair already and it will fit” he
added
Paa George
made it known that what makes him sad is when he shot a movie with miracle
production and they had to travel to Switzerland but he came back to hear of a
cholera outbreak which has resulted in the death of his mother. Each time he
has to cry whiles acting he remembers this and it makes him cry well because he
went to Switzerland because of his mother.
He has created a group in the act
centre called the Ebibiman Concert Party and when they take what he teaches it
also what makes him happy.
There are a
lot of challenges associated with the movie industry. Paa George told Pa Kay
his challenge that they don’t pay them as expected and they also don’t take
them to act a because they are getting old.
He advised
that the upcoming actors should emulate the old ones, check how they have been
in the acting industry till now, how they are still strong and listen to advice
as well.
