Richard
Nkrumah-Amos, popularly known as Rabbi is a talented writer who has recently
come out with the novel ‘Adjovi’ an interesting story which studies a slice of
Ghanaian life.
The first
suspense in the story ‘Adjovi’ makes one willing to continue reading it till
end. Rabbi on SKery Spark Talk on 24th October 2015 at Yes fm said
that the Ewe culture inspired the title ‘Adjovi’, which means little Adjoa.
“I met a man sometime ago and he started
speaking Ewe with me I told him I can’t speak the language. He was like how
then will you write a story portraying the Ewe culture? Then I told him that if
we look at Ghana right now, women are the ones who mostly suffer and many
nations and organizations talk a lot about the trokosi system when it comes to
the welfare of women, so why don’t we write about what really put women in
those situations? We took a little of the trokosi system and
what goes on at our beaches where children don’t go to school and wrote about
it, so that if read people will know what goes on so they help if they can” he
explained.
He said that
he nearly gave up when he started writing it because it was very challenging
and this was not like a text book where you can combine a lot of books and
write. Aside that he had to do intensive research, where he went to the Volta
Region, the priests and elders to help write it.
The story is
about Adjovi from a poor home but she made up her mind that no matter what she
has to do something for herself. After school she goes to a site to crack
stones, fetch water for people to get money but after she gets money the mother
uses it to buy clothes for funerals. She suffered a lot. Then a letter came for
a debate completion and Adjovi topped the whole school and she did well in the
competition with other schools as well. It was now left with the main
competition where if Adjovi participates, all her dreams will come to pass but
the saddest thing was that his father died and a day before the competition she
was taken to the shrine where the oracle demanded for a virgin to atone for the
crime of the father who stole farm produce. Adjovi was raped by the priest and
she had to serve at the shrine for 24 years according to tradition. What then
happens?
The
launching of the book will be on 31st of October 2015 at the Cape
Coast Metropolitan Assembly’s auditorium at 1pm.
He also
encouraged people to continue writing as it seems that the writing skill is
fading out.
